New media = new tools for communicating and thinking.
Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
Any new medium brings new opportunities for communication and the computer is clearly no exception. The latest innovations, often grouped together as Web 2.0 enable the production of high quality websites such as this blog but also videos which now can be annotated by groups.
But what about creativity and creative processes: do they transfer into new media, are there Skeuomorphs (design features from older media living on in newer media as decorative features) acting constrain the mind on what is possible? Do conventions, born out of technical limitations of one media become constraints for communication in new media? Do new tools constrain creative processes while first appearing to enhance them?
These questions are ones I seek to find answers to though toolmaking. I am interested in the relationship between tool making and creativity, and the creativity in the making of the tool and stated to make hypertext tools while studying new media art.
One aspect of ‘new media’ as it is often applied to ‘Web 2.0′ is the distributed nature of information. A story or narrative can exist in different media and be combined together without any loss in fidelity. This blog post is written to accompany the video above, an experiment in toolmaking. You are invited to interact with it. I will be using the results to inform my future tool making.
